Billie Eilish is bringing “solar-powered, intelligent battery systems” to her Thursday night headlining set at Lollapalooza this weekend! Teaming up with environmental non-profit REVERB, Eilish and Lollapalooza are using the zero-emissions battery systems to partially power the T-Mobile Stage at the south end of Grant Park in Chicago. The batteries, “supplied and managed by Overdrive Energy Solutions, will be charged via a temporary onsite ‘solar farm.’”
This is part of the Music Decarbonization Project, REVERB’s campaign to advance climate solutions to directly eliminate the carbon emissions created by the music industry, specifically touring. Billie Eilish helped fund and launch the project, and the goal at Lollapalooza is “to further prove clean energy technology’s ability to provide power to large stages and drive the music industry toward a future that is less reliant on highly polluting diesel generators.” Adam Gardner, co-founder and co-director of REVERB and frontman of the band Guster (who is of no relation to this journalist), has hope that this will be a watershed moment for the industry. “There are real climate solutions available right here, right now. By showcasing this technology with one of the biggest artists in the world, on one of the most revered festival stages, we’re accelerating the necessary transition toward a decarbonized future, for music and beyond.”
