Following his new film, Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese is set to direct an unnamed Grateful Dead biopic that will include A-List Actor, Jonah Hill. Stepping up as a producer, the Superbad actor will portray lead frontman, Jerry Garcia and fingers-crossed, captivate the singer’s enigmatic personality. Although the plot is unknown, the idea of experiencing the band’s growth from formation to legendary act is thrilling to fantasize about.

Unlike films such as Jimi: All Is By My Side and Stardust, the biopic will have the rights to the subject band’s music. With a Director who has had a long love affair for rock music and a history of making music documentaries, the bar for the film is quite high. To add even more confidence to the hype, Scorsese is well versed in the Band’s history, having created a documentary series about the Dead called the Long Strange Trip. If you add all these pieces together and sprinkle in the cooperation of surviving group members and their management, you get a huge win for Deadhead’s worldwide.

[The Grateful Dead are] more than just a band… They were their own planet, populated by millions of devoted fans.

Overall, the project is currently being developed by Apple and written by screenwriting team Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski; best known for “The People v. O.J. Simpson”, Man on the Moon, and Ed Wood. Executive producers also include Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart Trixie Garcia (Jerry Garcia’s daughter), and Jonah Hill’s production company, Strong Baby. As the years go by, Jonah Hill has proven himself to be leading man material. His come-up from The 40-Year-Old Virgin to the likes of Money Ball, The Wolf Of Wall Street, and Maniac is overly impressive. Hopefully, his talent will shine in this role as well.
