Jamaican-American R&B singer Masego released the music video for his song “Mystery Lady (Sego’s Remix)” this week. The original song, featuring Travis Scott-affiliated rapped Don Toliver, as well as the remix, appeared on Masego’s Studying Abroad: Extended Stay deluxe edition EP last year. Between all versions, “Mystery Lady” has hit 100 million global streams as of July 27. Earlier this year, he performed the song with Don Toliver on The Late Late Show With James Corden.
Masego’s debut LP, Lady Lady, came out in 2018; its lead single “Tadow” has racked up over 1 billion streams and was certified Platinum in the US, Diamond in Brazil, and Gold in Mexico. He has earned praise for his musicianship and versatility – he sings, raps, plays saxophone, drums, and piano – from major outlets such as The Los Angeles Times and NPR Music. He recently collaborated with rappers Rapsody and JID for “Somethin’ Ain’t Right” on the soundtrack to the Oscar-nominated film Judas and the Black Messiah.
The new music video was shot in Mexico City by Brazillian director Doug Bernhardt, who previously won the Cannes Lions Grand Prix for Entertainment for Music for his short film Bluesman. The vibrant and colorful video sees Masego exploring the streets, alleys, and courtyards of the city and encountering new partners, emphasizing its beautiful landscapes, both natural and man-made. These visuals pair lush, sensual dancing with equally rich sunsets.
