Medieval folk duo Small Fools joined with The Oh Hellos on select dates of their fall United States tour; and we met up with them at San Francisco’s historic The Fillmore to witness them live.

Small Fools have risen in the alternative folk niche on socials due to their unique takes on the genre. Siblings who were classically trained in music have crafted music of their own unique making, inspired by the medieval times, all while sharing powerful messages behind their lyrics. Their performance was no exception to this. Each song has an entire folktale written around it, really insightful lyrics for the modern day with an atmosphere that cleanses and sets the tone for peace and a little whimsy. Their works were showcased in full while they were live and it was a skillful performance, with fans singing along to favorites such as “Bone To Bone,” and “Melt in the Sun.”
When hearing them, you can feel the years of history and lore that was crafted into every lyric, transformed into ballads for the modern day with unique time signatures and melodies.
What we know for sure is that this duo is just getting started and we can’t wait to hear what’s coming next.

Of course we can’t forget to mention the project that leads the charge in dramatic and storytelling folk music without bringing up The Oh Hellos. The night was sold out with an audience that even whistled on key as they played a full two-hour set.
It’s been seven years since they were last in San Francisco, and you may know them from their viral hit, “Soldier, Poet, King” that exploded on social media a few years ago. And let’s just say that hundreds in the audience had not seen this band before and were excited to witness them live. Each song flowed into the next, which added an ease to the night that made the music feel about as ordinary as breathing itself.
Both Small Fools and The Oh Hellos carried the stage into a night many will remember forever. They both provided a space for voices to feel heard; a pastoral escape for just a few hours.
Stay tuned for more updates on Small Fools and The Oh Hellos.
